Walkthroughs

How a matter actually runs
from enquiry to closure.

Four practice areas, each walked through step by step, naming the part of MatterFirst that carries each one. Everything here is something the product does today and something you can make us prove in a demo.

Why there are no testimonials on this page

MatterFirst is new, and we would rather show you the product than quote customers we do not have yet. Nothing on this page is a testimonial, because there is not an honest one to print.

When there are firms willing to be named, we will name them, with their written sign-off, and you will be able to ring them. Until then everything on this page is a property of the software rather than a claim about somebody else's practice.

Matter lifecycle

The same eight steps, shaped differently per practice area.

Every matter runs through roughly the same arc. What changes is which steps carry the weight, which is why the workflow builder exists rather than a fixed process everyone has to adapt to.

Conveyancing

Instruction through to settlement, where the deadlines are external.

  1. 01

    Enquiry captured

The enquiry lands as a lead with its source recorded, so referral partners can be measured rather than guessed at.

    Lead pipelines
  2. 02

    Contract extracted

Upload the contract of sale and Document AI pulls the parties, the property, the price and the key dates into the matter.

  3. 03

    Workflow drives the file

Stages carry the settlement path, with automations firing tasks and client emails as each one completes.

  4. 04

    Client watches progress

The portal shows the client where the matter is up to, which is the question reception otherwise answers by phone.

Family law

Long-running matters where the client relationship is the hard part.

  1. 01

    Intake and conflict check

Capture the enquiry and search existing parties before the matter is opened. Matching runs on names in Latin script, so record a Latin spelling alongside any name written in another script.

    Matter management
  2. 02

    Documents in one thread

Correspondence, court documents and file notes sit on the matter with an audit trail of who changed what.

  3. 03

    Key dates tracked

Court dates and limitation periods raise tasks ahead of time rather than relying on a diary somebody has to remember.

    Automations
  4. 04

    Trust and billing

Trust accounting and invoicing sit in the same system as the work, so time recorded becomes an invoice without rekeying.

    Finance and reporting

Commercial

Volume of documents, and clients who ask for status by email.

  1. 01

    Matter opened from a template

A template pack installs the matter type, its workflow and its document set, so a new file starts configured.

    Matter management
  2. 02

    Key terms extracted

Document AI reads uploaded agreements and lifts the terms into fields you can search and report on.

    Document AI
  3. 03

    Ask the matter questions

The assistant answers from the documents on the file and cites which one it used, with inference in your chosen AWS region.

  4. 04

    Bill and collect

Invoices generate from recorded time and go out from your own inbox with your bank details, or straight to Xero if that is where your team works.

    Finance and reporting

General practice

Several practice areas in one firm, each wanting a different process.

  1. 01

    One pipeline, many matter types

Enquiries route to the right matter type on intake rather than everything landing in one queue.

    Lead pipelines
  2. 02

    A workflow per matter type

Each practice area gets its own stages and automations, versioned, so changing conveyancing does not disturb family law.

  3. 03

    Referrals measured

Track which partners send work and what it turns into, so the relationship can be assessed on numbers.

    Referral partners
  4. 04

    Reporting across the firm

Practice reporting covers matters, time, billing and trust across every area in one place.

Ask us to run your own matter type end to end.

Bring a matter type you actually run. We will walk it through the product rather than show you a slide deck, and tell you where it does not fit.
