Plans & billing

Can I import my data from Actionstep or LEAP?
Yes. We offer a Migration Package for firms moving matters, contacts, documents, and templates into MatterFirst. Smaller teams can also start manually and add migration support when the rollout needs it.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. You can start with a 7-day guided trial on Solo, Practice, or Firm so your team can test real workflows before committing.
What happens when my trial ends?
You can continue on Solo, Practice, or Firm, or speak with us about Enterprise. If you do not continue, your account is paused rather than deleted so your data stays safe while you decide.
Can I change plans at any time?
Yes. Upgrade when your firm needs more included users, credits, or support. Downgrades take effect at the next billing cycle.
Is pricing per seat or per firm?
MatterFirst uses workspace pricing. Each plan includes a set number of users and pooled Document AI credits; extra users are billed only when you go beyond the included seats.
Is annual billing available?
Yes. Annual billing is priced at 10 months for 12. Solo is $1,490/year, Practice is $4,990/year, and Firm is $9,990/year.
What's included in onboarding?
Annual Practice and Firm plans include Guided Setup. Firms that want more hands-on rollout support can add the Launch Package, Migration Package, or a custom Concierge Implementation.
Does MatterFirst include trust accounting?
Trust accounting is available for firms that need ledger, reconciliation, and disbursement workflows as part of their MatterFirst rollout.
Can I use MatterFirst for non-legal workflows?
Absolutely. MatterFirst is built for law firms but works for any workflow-driven professional services business — accounting, financial planning, mortgage broking, HR consulting.

Document AI

Do I get Document AI credits during trial?
Yes. Trial accounts include a starter pool of Document AI credits so you can test extraction before choosing a paid plan. Paid plans then include a fresh monthly credit allowance.
How does Document AI billing work?
Document AI uses page credits. Standard quality uses 1 credit per page and Full Accuracy uses 4 credits per page. Plans include monthly credits, and you can buy prepaid top-up packs or enable automatic top-ups if your firm processes more documents.
What is the difference between Standard and Full accuracy?
Standard uses table extraction, natural-language queries, layout detection and signatures. Best for contracts, letters, court documents and general prose-heavy files. Full Accuracy adds form field extraction and checkbox detection on top of everything Standard does. Best for conveyancing forms, mortgage documents, compliance checklists — any document with structured fields or tick-boxes.
What does the Key Term Extractor do?
It lets you define your own extraction rules and map them to any custom field, contact role, or key date in your matter. Every firm has different documents and different data that matters. Define a term once (e.g. “Certificate of Title reference”) and MatterFirst will extract it from every matching document automatically.
Which fields can Document AI automatically fill in a matter?
Contacts and their roles (buyer, seller, solicitor, lender), key dates (settlement, review periods, expiry clauses), pricing and financial figures, property details (address, lot/plan number, title reference), and any custom field you've mapped via the Key Term Extractor.
Can Document AI create contacts and portal users automatically?
Yes. When a party is identified in an uploaded document, MatterFirst can create or match them against your contact directory and assign them to the matter with the correct role. If the contact is a client, their portal access can be provisioned at the same time — no manual invite needed.
What types of documents work best with Document AI?
Contracts of sale, transfer documents, mortgage forms, leases, settlement statements, court documents, letters of engagement, wills, AFSL documents, and any form-based document. Standard tier is best for prose-heavy documents; Full Accuracy tier is best for structured forms and documents with checkboxes.
Can I add credits or extras at any time?
Yes. Document AI credit packs can be added from Billing at any time, and optional extras such as Domain Email, Custom Domain, and Integrated Calls can be activated when your firm needs them.

Data security & residency

Where is my data stored?
Sydney (ap-southeast-2) is the default region for Australian firms. Your matter data, files, and Document AI processing stay in the selected region.
Can I choose my AWS region?
Yes. Most Australian firms will use Sydney by default. If your organisation needs a different residency region, we can handle that during onboarding.
Does AI processing send my documents overseas?
No. When you use Document AI, both the OCR (AWS Textract) and the AI analysis (AWS Bedrock) run in your organisation's chosen region. Documents are never transferred to a different region for processing.
How is my data encrypted?
All data is encrypted at rest using AES-256 via AWS KMS, and all connections are protected by TLS 1.2+. Encryption keys are managed per-organisation.
