No credits. No conversion rate to work out. An AI balance in Australian dollars, a published rate for every kind of work, and a price shown before anything runs.
If it works on one file, it is included. If it scales with volume, it draws on your balance, and we show you the price before it runs.
Included on every plan
No balance to watch and no surcharge. These fire on the work you are already doing, so charging for them would be charging you to write a file note. There are fair-use limits behind them, on the order of sixty assistant messages per person per hour: enough that nobody using MatterFirst normally will meet one, and low enough that a script cannot run up a bill in your name.

Draws on your balance

A document costs a fixed fee to open plus a rate per page. That is deliberate: reading a document costs us a fixed amount however long it is, so a flat per-page price would overcharge on a long contract and lose money on a one-page rates notice. Two parts means the price tracks the work.

About 30 hours of a junior at A$250 an hour. We charge roughly six per cent of that.
How the balance behaves
- Your plan includes a balance every month
- A$100.00 on Solo, more on Practice and Firm. It resets on your billing date and does not roll over.
- Top-ups last twelve months and pool across the firm
- Purchased balance is not tied to a person or a matter, and it is spent last, after your included balance, so you never lose money you paid for.
- At zero, nothing is lost
- Uploads still store, index and become searchable. AI processing is refused with a clear message, and you can run it on any document the moment you top up.
- Above A$25.00, we quote first
- You see the number of documents, the number of questions, the total and what your balance would be afterwards. Above A$250.00 you type the amount to confirm.
- Automatic top-up is off unless you turn it on
- And when you do, it takes a monthly cap that we do not go past.
Top-ups
Flat. A$250.00 buys A$250.00 of work. There is no volume discount, because in a system priced in dollars a discount would mean A$250.00 buys A$275.00, which makes no sense.
Every charge records its matter
Each matter shows what its AI cost, and you can export that as a statement formatted for a disbursements ledger.
Queensland Law Society Guidance Statement No. 37 treats AI licence fees charged per user, as a lump sum or annually as practice overhead that cannot be billed to a client, and says per matter charging can fit the usual definition of a disbursement more easily. We give you the per matter record. Whether it is recoverable is between you, your costs agreement and your client, and we do not advise on it.
