What the AI costs, in dollars, before you buy it.

No credits. No conversion rate to work out. An AI balance in Australian dollars, a published rate for every kind of work, and a price shown before anything runs.

Included on every plan

No balance to watch and no surcharge. These fire on the work you are already doing, so charging for them would be charging you to write a file note. There are fair-use limits behind them, on the order of sixty questions to the assistant per person per hour: enough that nobody using MatterFirst normally will meet one, and low enough that a script cannot run up a bill in your name.

Draws on your balance

Published, and fixed until 1 August 2028. Prices are ex GST.

When the assistant carries something out for you, such as creating a task, booking a key date or working through a matter, it is charged by how much AI that work used, at twice what it costs us. Most actions cost about A$0.20 to A$0.60, going by real usage, and you see each one, with what it cost, under AI this month in Billing & Plan. Automations that run an agent, and deep research, are charged the same way. Asking a question is included.

A document costs a fixed fee to open plus a rate per page. That is deliberate: reading a document costs us a fixed amount however long it is, so a flat per-page price would overcharge on a long contract and lose money on a one-page rates notice. Two parts means the price tracks the work.

How the balance behaves

Your plan includes a balance every month

A$100.00 on Solo, more on Practice and Firm. It resets on your billing date and does not roll over.

Top-ups last twelve months and pool across the firm

Purchased balance is not tied to a person or a matter, and it is spent last, after your included balance, so you never lose money you paid for.

At zero, nothing is lost

Uploads still store, index and become searchable. AI processing is refused with a clear message, and you can run it on any document the moment you top up.

Work charged by use stops at your balance

An action the assistant carries out, or an automation's agent, only starts when there is balance for it and stops if the balance runs out part way, so it can never cost more than you have. Questions to the assistant keep working.

Above A$25.00, we quote first

You see the number of documents, the number of questions, the total and what your balance would be afterwards. Above A$250.00 you type the amount to confirm.

Automatic top-up is off unless you turn it on

And when you do, it takes a monthly cap that we do not go past.

Top-ups

Flat. A$250.00 buys A$250.00 of work. There is no volume discount, because in a system priced in dollars a discount would mean A$250.00 buys A$275.00, which makes no sense.

Know what your AI work costs

Inspect MatterFirst usage charges across the firm, by work type and against individual matters. Each matter has a charge breakdown and itemised export to support a disbursements ledger. Work without a matter is not silently allocated to a client.

Queensland Law Society Guidance Statement No. 37 treats AI licence fees charged per user, as a lump sum or annually as practice overhead that cannot be billed to a client, and says per matter charging can fit the usual definition of a disbursement more easily. These are MatterFirst usage charges, not raw model-provider costs or the firm's spend on other AI products. Included monthly allowance consumption is distinct from additional purchased usage. We give you the per matter record. Recovery depends on applicable rules and your costs agreement; recording a charge does not establish entitlement or automatically invoice a client.
