Lesson 7 of 8 · 7 min
Asking for help & coverage
Request a hand on a matter and cover for teammates who are away.
When you're stuck or stretched, you can raise your hand on a matter and let a manager pick it up — and when someone's away, coverage keeps their work moving. This lesson covers both.
Before you start
- More than one person in your organisation, with at least one manager
-
1
Request help from a matter
On any matter, click Request help — it sits at the top of the matter, next to Request Documents, and also in the Team tab's header. It opens the "Request help on this matter" dialog: add a short note about what you need a hand with — for example "Need someone to run the title searches before Friday" — and click Request help. Your request is tied to that matter, so whoever helps has all the context.
Request help from the matter, with a note so a colleague knows what you need. -
2
Managers claim it in Team workload
Raising a request notifies every manager (and above). They see it in the Team workload view (Team workload in the sidebar, /app/workspace) under "Help requested", where each request shows your note and a link to the matter. A manager clicks "I'll take it" to claim it; your own requests show a "Your request" badge instead of the claim button, so you can see it's been logged.
Managers see open requests in Team workload and claim them with "I'll take it". -
3
Set coverage while you're away
For planned time away, use Coverage on the same Team workload page. Choose the Person away, who's Covered by them, and the From/To dates, then click Set coverage. While coverage is active, matters assigned to the away person show a banner offering to reassign the work to their coverer, so nothing stalls. Active coverage can be ended early, and coverage scheduled for the future can be cancelled before it starts.
Coverage reassigns an away teammate's work for a set period.
Tips & pitfalls
- Requesting help notifies every manager and above, not one specific person — it's a call for whoever's free, not a direct message.
- Coverage is firm-wide: on a covered matter you'll see an "Assign to <coverer>" banner right on the matter page, so you can hand the file over in one click.
Key takeaways
- Request help from the button at the top of a matter (or in its Team tab), adding a note for context
- Managers get notified and claim requests with "I'll take it" in Team workload
- Coverage reassigns an away teammate's matters for a chosen date range
